The insider track on the Colli Euganei, self-catering in Devon and walking in Provence
Why go?
Rising up out of the plains southwest of Padua, these conical hills or colli were a popular retreat for the nobles and bishops of Venice, who built elaborate villas and palazzi here. The region is criss-crossed by walking and cycling trails and dotted with little spa towns where you can soak away aches in thermal pools fed by hot springs. Venice, Padua and Verona are within striking distance but you might find it hard to tear yourself away from the tranquil hills with their welcoming agriturismos serving up the distinctive Veneto wine and food.
